Tesla responds to rear wheel falling off accident

Publish Date: 2022.01.13

On January 12, some media reported that the right rear wheel of a Tesla Model Y fell off during high-speed driving, and then rear-ended with a large truck.

According to the owner of the car, he was driving normally at a speed of 110 km/h on the expressway when the right rear wheel of the vehicle suddenly fell off, and the vehicle lost control and hit a large truck in the adjacent lane.

Due to the sudden incident and the high speed of the car, the big car had no time to brake, so it pushed the Tesla forward for 300 meters before it stopped slowly.

The owner claimed that his wife was still in the car at the time. Fortunately, the accident did not cause any injuries. What puzzled him was that half a month ago, he had just gone to Tesla for maintenance, so he did not understand why the rear wheel will fall off immediately.

In this regard, some netizens believe that the accident may be related to the recall incident some time ago.

To this end, Caijing.com contacted the relevant person in charge of Tesla. The other party said: The incident vehicle collided with the vehicle in the right lane during driving, and in the process of rubbing and squeezing, it caused damage to the right rear wheel. The damage caused the wheel to deform and separate, and the "wheel falling off caused the accident" spread on the Internet is inconsistent with the facts and has nothing to do with the previous recall.

On December 3 last year, Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. filed a recall plan with the State Administration for Market Regulation in accordance with the requirements of the "Regulations on the Administration of the Recall of Defective Vehicle Products" and the "Implementation Measures for the Regulations on the Administration of the Recall of Defective Vehicle Products". From now on, some domestic Model Y electric vehicles with a production date between February 4, 2021 and October 30, 2021 will be recalled, totaling 21,599 vehicles.

For some vehicles within the recall scope, the strength of the front and rear steering knuckles may not meet the design requirements due to the manufacturer's manufacturing reasons. The steering knuckle may be deformed or broken during the use of the vehicle. Under extreme stress conditions, the suspension link may be disengaged from the steering knuckle, affecting the driving and control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a collision accident, and posing a safety hazard.
