Tesla open charging gun design patent can provide both AC and DC charging

Publish Date: 2022.11.15

Although the sales volume of model cars in the domestic market is good, Tesla's patent applications in China have been stable.

On November 12, Tesla announced on its social media that the company was opening its electric vehicle charging gun design to the world, and invited charging network operators and automobile manufacturers to use Tesla's charging gun and charging port.

The official said that the charger can provide AC charging and 1MW DC charging at the same time In addition, Tesla renamed its charging gun and port as North American Charging Standard (NACS), and said that it is the most common charging standard in the local area.

It is worth mentioning that Tesla points out that network operators have planned to add the NACS standard to their charging posts, so their owners can charge their vehicles on other networks without adapters.

The design of the electric vehicle charging gun is not the first technical patent disclosed by Tesla this year. In February 2022, the company announced its global headlight patent, which can meet the needs of different countries and jurisdictions, and reduce the cost of Tesla's production of different types of headlights.

It is reported that due to the different left and right helmets of cars in different countries, local auto manufacturers need to equip their cars with headlights of different specifications to meet the road requirements. The system conceived by Tesla effectively solves the problem of potential cost increase. The official said that the system can automatically adjust the headlights through separate software to meet the needs of different jurisdictions. The patent can only use computer software to simulate the beam, and use the headlamp controller and LED matrix to generate the required beam, rather than the geometry of the reflector.

In 2008, Tesla's first model roadster was released, and its earliest patent application began when the company was founded in 2003.

It is worth mentioning that Tesla attaches great importance to intellectual property rights. According to an article entitled "Analysis of Tesla Motors' Global Patents", since Tesla submitted its first patent in 2005, it has applied for 294 patents in the following ten years, including 8 design patent applications in 2012.

From the perspective of patent application region, Tesla's application is characterized by "focusing on the United States and the European Union, with less distribution in the domestic market". The article "Comparative Analysis of the Patents of Weilai Automobile and Tesla Automobile" points out that Tesla's patent applications are mainly concentrated in the United States, followed by the European Union. In comparison, the number of applications in China, South Korea and Japan is relatively small, but their applications involve a wide range of technologies, almost no blank spots and technical blind spots.

In terms of the number of patents, although the sales volume of model cars in the domestic market is good, Tesla's patent applications in China have been relatively stable.

From the perspective of patent content and characteristics, the article "Patent Analysis of Tesla Electric Vehicle Competition Pattern" points out that Tesla's patents related to equipment manufacturing, battery and battery control account for a relatively high proportion, indicating that these technologies are the key technologies of Tesla and the core technologies of electric vehicles.

The article "Comparative Analysis of the Patents of Weilai Automobile and Tesla Automobile" points out that the battery thermal management system is the core technology of Tesla. Caijing Auto learned that its first patent related to thermal management was applied in 2007. In 2009 and 2010, Tesla applied for two patents respectively for battery efficiency, which played a role in reducing manufacturing costs and preventing overcharge.
