Not long ago, GBA (Global Battery Alliance) announced the results of the 2024 "Battery Passport" pilot project, with a total of ten pilot projects selected. Multiple projects from five power battery companies, including CATL, Guoxuan High Tech, BYD, Zhongchuang Chuanghang, and EVE Energy, are listed.
learned that the development and promotion of the "Battery Passport" will play a significant role in establishing sustainable development standards for the global battery industry, filling regulatory gaps, and promoting a green future. As a "passport" for battery exports, the "battery passport" has made new progress.
The second round of pilot projects has been announced
It is reported that at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January 2023, GBA released the first batch of concept validation results for the "battery passport". Based on the successful completion of the first batch of "Battery Passport" concept verification projects in 2023, GBA announced in June this year that it will launch the second round of "Battery Passport" pilot projects led by the world's leading battery manufacturers, which account for over 80% of the global electric vehicle battery market share.、
According to the announced results, the top ten pilot projects include CATL's Shenxing Battery Project, CTP Battery Project in collaboration with NIO and RCS Global, LFP Battery Project in collaboration with Smart, BYD's LIP Battery Project P48, Samsung SDI's Battery Project, LFP Battery Project D300N97EA in collaboration with Smart, LG New Energy's NCM Battery Project LGAMEV24-C1, EVE Energy's NCM Battery Project XCVB654321BERT, Xinwangda's LFP Battery Project PBH3XD9E50S in collaboration with SAIC Group, and Xinwangda's LFP Battery Project in collaboration with Ideal Automotive.
It can be said that the ten outstanding projects are outstanding leaders in leading innovation in battery lifecycle management. GBA Executive Director Inga Petersen stated, "The 'Battery Passport' pilot project in 2024 has achieved remarkable results. The world's leading battery manufacturers have mobilized their supply chains to carry out work and submitted reports in accordance with unified sustainable development expectations, fully demonstrating the solemn commitment of all parties to actively fulfill the 2030 GBA Vision to improve transparency and sustainability
The "Battery Passport" is an innovative initiative launched by GBA to improve battery lifecycle management. The 'battery passport' is a digital twin of physical batteries, which enables transparent digital management of the entire supply chain of power batteries. Consumers and regulatory agencies can easily and directly access relevant information about battery products through the "battery passport"; The government can use the 'battery passport' as an important policy tool to promote low-carbon, circular, and sustainable development of the battery industry.
It is reported that both the Shenxing Battery and CTP Battery pilot projects of CATL have separate "passports". The carbon footprint (HMA) calculation values for both pilot projects are approximately 49kg CO2 eq/kWh, which means that for every kWh of battery production, only 49kg of carbon dioxide equivalent is emitted.
The 'passport' for future battery exports
As the leading player in the domestic power battery industry, Zeng Yuqun, Chairman and CEO of CATL, pays special attention to the "battery passport". In the 2023 National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Zeng Yuqun submitted a proposal titled "On Conducting Research on China's Power Battery Passport and Supporting Policies to Strengthen the Management of the Whole Life Cycle of Battery Products".
He suggested that guided by the "dual carbon" goal, leveraging the advantages of China's complete industrial chain and abundant application data, and addressing practical management needs such as carbon footprint, ESG, recycling traceability, and hierarchical utilization, research and design China's "battery passport" and use it as a digital management tool for the full lifecycle management of China's battery industry.
At this year's World New Energy Vehicle Conference, Zeng Yuqun once again mentioned that the newly released "battery passport" standard will become a "passport" for batteries to participate in zero carbon new infrastructure.
In recent years, with the booming development of China's new energy vehicle industry, power battery companies that occupy a leading position globally are actively seeking to go global. However, in this process, multiple challenges to going global, such as green barriers, are emerging.
The EU Battery and Waste Battery Regulation has stipulated that from July 2024, most batteries exported to Europe (including electric vehicle batteries, light vehicle batteries, and rechargeable industrial batteries) must provide a carbon footprint statement and label. Battery export manufacturers are required to disclose carbon emission data from upstream minerals and materials to battery production, recycling, and reuse. In the future, the EU will also classify carbon emissions and set relevant thresholds, requiring batteries to meet the carbon footprint limit requirements by July 2027.
In order to enhance their international competitiveness and promote the sustainable and healthy development of the new energy industry, more and more power battery companies are integrating ESG concepts into their development strategies and actively promoting the GBA "Battery Passport" action.
It is worth noting that in order to further accelerate the construction of China's "battery passport" system, on April 20th this year, the China Battery Industry Association, together with China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, Jiangsu International Data Port, CATL, Rheinland Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Nanjing Fosun Intelligent Manufacturing Technology Co., Ltd. and other units, jointly released the "White Paper on China's Battery Digital Passport System".
