According to the German "Auto Weekly" report, Volkswagen Group and former CEO Wendern reached an agreement on "emission gate" compensation a few days ago, to pay 11.2 million euros to Volkswagen Group, setting a new record of compensation for German executives.
Volkswagen stated as early as March of this year that Wyndern had violated relevant obligations and failed to fully and quickly clarify the circumstances behind the use of illegal software functions in certain diesel engines and would claim against it.
According to public reports, Wendern refused to be responsible for the diesel gate scandal. But a week after the scandal was exposed, Wendern resigned as Volkswagen's CEO on September 23, 2015, and was arrested by German authorities in 2018 on the grounds that he knew and allowed software cheating.
It is understood that four former executives and insurance companies, including Wendern, will pay the public 288 million euros. In addition to Wendern, the former Audi CEO Rupert Stadler (Rupert Stadler) has to pay 3.1 million euros, and the former Porsche director Wolfgang Hatz (Wolfgang Hatz) has to pay 1.5 million euros. The former head of Audi R&D Stefan Knirsch (Stefan Knirsch) is required to pay 1 million euros. The remaining 270 million euros will be paid by insurance companies.
It is reported that the four former senior executives of the Volkswagen Group have all purchased third-party liability insurance for senior executives to settle claims when they make mistakes in the management group. The four former executives have purchased more than 30 third-party liability insurance, including Allianz and Zurich Insurance.
At present, the Volkswagen Group has paid 50 billion euros in compensation for the emission gate.
The industry commented that this is the largest and most difficult scandal that the company has encountered since its inception. The public expects to take this reconciliation and honourably terminate the "emission gate" incident, but the impact may continue.
Public information shows that the "emission gate" is derived from the introduction of Audi common rail injection technology by Volkswagen brand models, and uses a special software control system designed and developed for this engine and illegal control of engine operation functions. The installation of illegal cheating software is designed to deal with the corresponding exhaust emission regulations of diesel vehicles sold in the US market.
It is reported that ICCT, a private German-American joint venture international council for clean transportation, first discovered the clues, and its test results showed that the actual nitrogen oxide emissions of the American Jetta diesel models exceeded the standard by 15-35 times.
In September 2015, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency accused Volkswagen of installing cheating software in some diesel vehicles, allowing the inspected vehicles to pass the test with high standards. Volkswagen then admitted that it has installed such software in response to exhaust emission detection in approximately 11 million diesel vehicles sold worldwide.
According to foreign media reports, the governments of the United States, Germany, and Canada have since initiated allegations. At the same time, the national judicial agencies of Italy, the Netherlands and other countries have successively imposed fines on the Volkswagen Group.
Not long ago, a British court ruled that some of Volkswagen’s diesel vehicles passed the emission test with the help of some kind of efficiency reduction device, which reduced their nitrogen oxide emissions by 40 times. The result of this ruling means that British car owners who bought nearly 100,000 car brands involving Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and SEAT under the Volkswagen Group can rely on this court ruling to accuse Volkswagen Group of emissions cheating, misleading consumers, and claim compensation in accordance with the law.
Industry analysis speculates that the reason for the launch of the “emission gate” may be a struggle for global sales hegemony. At that time, Toyota, Volkswagen, and GM competed. To secure the top spot, Volkswagen needed to make up for the weaknesses in the US market. But for quite some time, Volkswagen's frequent sales in the U.S. market has not shown any improvement, and this has led to a slant.
According to official sources, the Volkswagen Group released the "TOGETHER-Strategy 2025" (TOGETHER-Strategy 2025) in June 2016. After the emission gate incident, it expects to switch from the diesel-powered fast channel to new energy vehicles. In November of the same year, the Volkswagen Group announced the 2025 strategy (Transform 2025+), which aims to eliminate low-capacity and low-profit models and use the saved funds (approximately 2.5 billion euros) for electric vehicle research and development, and strive to gain greater access to new areas. Take the initiative to dispel the negative image of the “emission gate”.
Throughout the development of the Volkswagen Group’s new energy vehicles, it has experimented in the fields of hybrid power, plug-in hybrid power, extended-range hybrid power and electric vehicles. In order to repair the impact of the emission gate, the current path choice for Volkswagen is to bypass hybrid vehicles, cut directly into electric vehicles, and develop and produce ID. series new energy vehicles on the MEB platform.
Last year, Volkswagen officially launched the first mass-produced ID.3, and ID.4 was also officially released this year. However, the concept car ID.3 was accused of not being brilliant enough, regardless of its cruising range and advanced battery pack performance. As a result, Volkswagen's performance in the new energy field was accused of being a quick response to shifting the public's perspective.
Some comments stated that its technical reserve capacity in opening up new energy is actually lagging behind the industry as a whole. At present, the Volkswagen Group is actively developing new energy fields on the one hand, and on the other hand, it continues to use clean diesel power as an important form of power to complete the transition of technology research and development and the transition of the shadow of the "emission gate".
