Due to the shortage of chips, the German auto industry's prosperity index hits a new low since April

Publish Date: 2021.09.04

According to reports, the German Ifo Economic Research Institute stated on September 2 that with the supply chain disruption and the further intensification of the chip crisis, the prosperity index of the German auto industry in August dropped from 56.4 points to 28.8 points, a decrease of nearly 30 points from the previous month. Set a new low since April.

The global automotive industry has been hit by the shortage of semiconductor chips, and the crisis of chip shortages is still "not in sight."

According to estimates by industry insiders, in the second quarter of 2021, the shortage of chips will reduce global automobile production by 2 million; it is expected that in the third quarter, global automobile production will also decrease by about 1 million. Oliver Falck, director of the Ifo Industry Organization and New Technology Center, said: "This shows that the automotive industry is still affected by the supply bottleneck of intermediate products, especially chips."

Although the market expects that the chip shortage faced by the automotive industry will continue, and the electronics industry’s demand for chips with the highest profit margins has weakened the potential for supply growth in the automotive industry, the expected output of German automakers has improved in August.

The recent auto production increased by more than 10 points from the previous month to 34.8 points. Despite the sharp drop in demand, auto export expectations have almost doubled to 15.1 points. Auto inventory is expected to fall from -33.3 points to -42.1 points, and the negative impact has intensified; while the auto industry's employment expectations have turned bearish due to production constraints.

Falck added: "These fluctuations reflect the tremendous structural changes in the automotive industry."

Although the automotive industry is increasingly dependent on digital technology (the development of new technologies requires the recruitment of new employees), employment expectations remain bearish.
