In Europe, stellantis points to Tesla

Publish Date: 2022.08.05

Last week, stellantis released the latest financial report data for the first half of 2022. On the first anniversary of the merger, the group's revenue reached 88 billion euros, a year-on-year increase of 17%; The operating profit was 12.4 billion euros, a year-on-year increase of 44%, and the net profit was 8 billion euros, a year-on-year increase of 34%.

At the financial report communication meeting in the first half of the year, Carlos Tavares, CEO of stellantis, told analysts that the group was sprinting to the top of pure electric vehicle sales in the European market, surpassing Tesla and Volkswagen and becoming a new benchmark for the European electric vehicle market.

According to the data of dataforce, a consulting company, in the first half of this year, stellantis sold 105000 pure electric vehicles in Europe, second only to Volkswagen Group (116000). Tesla ranked third, with a total sales of 78000 pure electric new cars.

These statistics include European Union countries, as well as markets such as the UK. For the time being, there are no data from Portugal, Sweden and Finland.

The main driving force of stellantis in Europe comes from the new Fiat 500 small hatchback, which is the best-selling pure electric vehicle in Western Europe in the second quarter and the best-selling pure electric vehicle in Italy and Germany from April to June.

For stellantis, another key pure electric vehicle is Peugeot e-208, which occupied the first place in the sales of electric vehicles in France in the second quarter.

It is worth mentioning that Tesla's European sales have been adversely affected by external factors, such as the shutdown caused by the Shanghai epidemic blockade, because the model 3 produced by Tesla's Shanghai factory is also exported to Europe.

In order to seize the European market faster, Tesla also launched the production of model y of Berliner. After the new factory enters mass production, it is expected that the sales volume of Tesla in the European market will be greatly boosted in the second half of the year.

Even so, Tesla still occupied two of the top selling pure electric vehicle models in Europe in the first half of the year. According to dataforce, Tesla sold 39969 model y in Europe in the first half of the year, while the sales of model 3 fell by 25% to 38280.

Considering the capacity recovery of the Shanghai plant and the ramp up of the Berlin plant, stellantis is likely to encounter a more fierce market impact from Tesla in the second half of the year. In the view of many European market analysts, Tesla is likely to return in the third quarter with a high profile, and the new car sales are likely to be as high as 200000.
