Apple is spending nearly $19 billion on research and development to upend tesla

Publish Date: 2020.05.26

Recently, according to Apple insider, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty estimated that Apple will spend nearly $19 billion on automotive research and development this year. For comparison, Huberty put the industry as a whole at $80 billion to $100 billion on research and development. The flood of money into car research and development is one reason why apple and other technology companies have the potential to disrupt the car market.

Apple sees automotive technology as "a huge market," similar to its views on health and financial technology, huberty said.Huberty predicts that apple's ultimate goal will be to develop "vertically integrated solutions" in automotive technology.

"The end of the game can't just be a more advanced version of CarPlay with other automakers," huberty said, noting that apple needs to control the platform's top-level design, internal architecture, experience and services.

Taking tesla as an example, its vertical energy integration solution includes Solar Roof, Solar Panels, Powerwall and Powerpack, which integrates the solutions of energy collection, power generation, storage and use.It can be seen that apple is also committed to developing "through-train" technology solutions for self-driving cars.

In a tesla report, the analyst Adam Jonas asked Mr. Huberty to compare apple to tesla. In his report, huberty argued that apple and tesla would not work together because apple appeared intent on creating a product that could compete with tesla.

So far, apple has published nearly 70 patents related to automobiles, including electric motors, suspension systems, lighting, vehicle floors, window heating, vehicle navigation and bumpers, in addition to those related to vehicle intelligence such as in-car systems and autonomous driving. This means that apple's car-building ambitions don't end with intelligent interaction, but with the intention of creating a new species of car that could topple tesla.
