Publish Date: 2020.06.05

This round of job cuts accounts for about a quarter of bentley's workforce.

Bentley, the ultra-luxury carmaker owned by Volkswagen, is cutting 1,000 jobs in the UK, or about a quarter of its workforce, as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, according to a new BBC report.

Bentley has so far declined to comment on the job cuts, but people familiar with the matter have told European media that a formal announcement is expected next week.

Production at Bentley's Crewe plant in London has resumed, but staff are running at about half normal levels, ITV reported this week.Last month Adrian Hallmark, the company's boss, told Reuters that about a quarter of its staff had been furloughed and another quarter were working from home because of the lockdown.

It is understood that Bentley's Crewe plant will be forced to leave voluntarily as the outbreak continues to spread through the first half of the year, forcing the company to cut costs and make profits.

Last year, Bentley completed a turnaround plan, but the company suffered an unexpected negative hit to sales and production due to a dramatic drop in demand for a new car triggered by a Novel Coronavirus.Due to the epidemic, consumers are holding a wait-and-see attitude towards the purchase of commodities, especially luxury commodities.
