Changan Automobile plans to gradually realize mass production of L4/L5 autonomous driving models by 2022.

    On November 11, at the 2020 World Intelligent Connected Vehicle Conference, Changan Automobile Chairman Zhu Huarong stated that Changan Automobile will transform into an intelligent mobility technology company through the "third entrepreneurship". He also revealed that Changan Automobile will gradually realize mass production of L4 and L5 autonomous driving models by 2022.

    In 2017, Changan Automobile proposed the "Third Entrepreneurship" plan, which was officially launched in April of the following year. The key words of the plan are "new energy", "brand improvement" and "intelligence".

    In terms of intelligence, in August 2018, Changan Automobile released the "Beidou Tianshu" plan, announcing that it will transform into an intelligent travel technology company, and plans to invest 20 billion yuan in the next 10 years.

    Autonomous driving technology is the focus of Changan Automobile's intelligent R&D.

    The goal of Changan Automobile's intelligentization is: to achieve L3 mass production of autonomous driving by 2020, and to achieve L4 mass production of autonomous driving by 2025.

    At present, some models of Changan Automobile on sale have reached the L2 level, equipped with a driving assistance system, with functions such as automatic parking assistance, adaptive cruise, lane departure prompt, and scene reconstruction.

    According to Changan Automobile, in July last year, L4 autonomous driving completed the demonstration operation in the open scenario. In March of this year, UNI-T completed the mass production test of L3 autonomous driving. In April, Changan Automobile plans to invest 1 billion yuan to build an L4-level driverless operation platform.

    Changan Automobile stated to Caijing.com that after subsequent laws and regulations are opened, Changan Automobile will achieve mass production of L3 models on the market.

    However, senior auto analyst Ren Wanfu said that intelligence is a long-term process, and everyone is still in the exploratory stage, and the starting point is almost the same.

    Independent automobile analyst Zhang Xiang said that among enterprise cars, new automakers such as Tesla and Weilai have more advantages in the field of autonomous driving. Tesla is currently at the L2 level of autonomous driving.

    Based on this, Changan Automobile's advantages in intelligence have yet to be further constructed.
