According to foreign media reports, a survey shows that consumers in Europe and the United States are increasingly accepting electric vehicles, but they are still worried about their prices. The results of this survey highlight that the government needs to continue to provide subsidies in order to achieve sales targets for electric vehicles and environmental protection targets.

OC&C Strategy Consultants' survey results released on Monday showed that compared with the same period last year, the proportion of consumers interested in buying pure electric vehicles has ushered in a substantial increase. The agency said that between December last year and January this year, they conducted a questionnaire survey of more than 7,500 consumers around the world. The lead author of the study, Felicity Latcham, said that OC&C did not receive any external funding for this study.
Consumers’ attitudes towards electric vehicles are changing at a critical moment in the automotive industry. Car companies are releasing more and more electric models to meet more stringent carbon dioxide emissions targets and catch up with those that have already occupied a dominant position in the electric vehicle market. The survey shows that in the UK, France and Italy, more than half of consumers said that they would consider pure electric vehicles when buying a car next time. In Germany and the United States, nearly half of consumers said they would consider buying pure electric vehicles. This proportion has increased significantly compared with last year, especially in the United Kingdom and the United States, where consumers’ willingness to buy electric vehicles has increased by 81% and 61%, respectively.
However, consumers are still cautious about the price of electric vehicles, because under normal circumstances, the price of such vehicles is more expensive than internal combustion engine vehicles. The survey shows that although people’s concerns about the range and charging infrastructure of electric vehicles have decreased compared with last year, the overall cost of electric vehicles is still the biggest obstacle for consumers when making a car purchase decision.
Among all consumers interested in buying an electric car, 69% said that if the price of an electric car is more than $500 more than a gasoline model, they will give up buying an electric car. This means that if there is no government subsidy, this price difference is unlikely to be realized.
Increasing the number of electric vehicles is also one of the core of the US government's infrastructure construction plan, which will provide an additional $100 billion in funding to subsidize electric vehicles. In addition, the US government will provide 15 billion U.S. dollars for the construction of 500,000 new charging stations.
