A Volkswagen spokesperson said that the company still expects that the group's operating profit margin in 2021 will reach 5.5% to 7%, and the profit margin of its main brands will reach 3% to 4%. The spokesperson said: "Fortunately, so far, through the sale of inventory and other measures, we have clearly limited the negative impact of chip shortages on customers, and also limited the impact on deliveries."

According to media reports on June 22, Volkswagen estimated that its output this year would be reduced by more than 800,000 vehicles due to the shortage of chip supply. A Volkswagen spokesperson declined to confirm this figure and said that the company cannot reliably predict the impact of semiconductor shortages on production and delivery before the end of this year. He also added that Volkswagen has previously stated that insufficient chip supply will result in the company's production reduction by hundreds of thousands.

Last month, Volkswagen said that the company expects that the chip shortage will ease in the third quarter, but the shortage of chips will continue for a long time. At the time, Murat Aksel, the head of procurement for the Volkswagen Board of Directors, told the media: "At present, we have reached the lowest point. We are facing the most difficult six weeks." From a point of view, there will be a 10% gap in chip supply. Aksel revealed that Volkswagen will prepare for supply bottlenecks by expanding chip storage, and the company is currently grading the supply risks of all its models.
