Publish Date: 2021.07.02

According to foreign media reports, although the shortage of chips in June led to a decline in domestic production and sales in South Korea, due to strong overseas demand, vehicle deliveries from South Korea's top five automakers rose 15% year-on-year.

According to data from various companies on July 1, South Korea’s top five automakers Hyundai Motor, Kia, GM Korea, Renault Samsung, and Ssangyong sold a total of 657,547 vehicles in June, an increase of 15.1% year-on-year. In the first half of this year, the cumulative sales of the five auto companies rose 22% year-on-year to 3,723,634 vehicles. Specifically, domestic deliveries in South Korea fell 5.9% year-on-year to 753,104 vehicles, while export deliveries rose 31.7% year-on-year to 2,970,530 vehicles.

In June, South Korea’s overseas sales were strong. The total export volume of the five major auto companies increased by 32.5% year-on-year to 522,786 units. This helped offset the negative impact of the 23.6% year-on-year drop in local deliveries (to 134,761 units). The delivery volume has risen. Due to the shortage of chips and the decline in production, the five car companies' car deliveries in South Korea have all declined.

In the same month, South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor delivered 354,409 vehicles, an increase of 14.4% from the same period last year. Among them, South Korea's sales fell 18.3% year-on-year to 68,407 vehicles, and overseas deliveries rose 26.5% year-on-year to 286,002 vehicles. Hyundai Grandeur sold 9,483 units and became the best-selling model. The cumulative sales of the Nexo fuel cell vehicle exceeded the milestone of 15,000 units three years after its release.

Kia’s total deliveries increased by 20.2% year-on-year to 253,592 units, of which overseas deliveries increased by 35.4% year-on-year to 204,312 units, and Korean sales fell 17.9% year-on-year to 49,280 units. Kia’s compact SUV Lion Race was the best-selling model, with 30,906 units sold, followed by the Seltos and K3, with 24,680 units and 24,639 units sold respectively.

GM Korea delivered 26,876 vehicles, up 3.4% year-on-year. Thanks to strong demand from Chevrolet Innovations (more than 15,000 units sold), export deliveries surged 78.6% year-on-year to 21,136 vehicles; domestic sales in South Korea fell 38.6% year-on-year to 5,740 vehicles.

Ssangyong and Renault Samsung are in a difficult situation. Renault Samsung's sales fell 0.7% year-on-year to 14,166 units. Export volume increased by 1,000% year-on-year to 8,566 units, due to the launch of the XM3 SUV in Europe; local sales fell 59% year-on-year to 5,610 units.

In June, the sales volume of Ssangyong Motors, which is undergoing bankruptcy court management, fell 17% year-on-year to 8,504 units, local sales fell 41% year-on-year to 5,724 units, and export volume soared more than 5 times to 2,780 units.
