Affected by the shortage of chips, after Toyota announced that it will cut production capacity on a large scale, Volkswagen also stated that its largest plant in the world, the Wolfsburg plant, will restart after the summer vacation. This week, Monday to Friday (August 23-27) Only one shift will be opened.
At the same time, Volkswagen’s largest profit contributor, Audi, also extended its summer vacation at two factories in Germany by one week due to “unstable and tight” chip supply. A statement issued by Volkswagen last Friday (August 20) also revealed that its SEAT brand plant in Barcelona, Spain has also stopped production of some models.
In order to offset the production gap in the first half of the year, SEAT specially continued production during the summer vacation in August, but had to shut down its factory's No. 2 assembly line for two days due to a "core shortage". Up to now, SEAT has produced 8,000 cars in August, partially offsetting the production gap in the first half of the year.
Recently, due to a new round of the new crown epidemic in Southeast Asia, the production of some chip factories has been restricted, which has further intensified the global automotive "chip shortage". As a result, many automakers have expressed concerns about chip supply in the next few months.
Last Thursday, Toyota announced that its 14 factories in Japan will adopt production cuts, which will continue until next month. Toyota expects that its global car production will be cut by 40% in September. Prior to this, Volkswagen also stated that its production in the third quarter would be "really affected"; while BMW predicted that the continued "core shortage" would bring uncertainty.
According to research by Susquehanna Financial Group, it has taken more than 20 weeks for chip-scarce companies to complete orders, indicating that the shortage is getting worse.
